Newsom Issues Executive Order Suspending State Rules to Aide School Recovery After LA Fires

Governor Gavin Newsom issued an executive order suspending state rules for LA County local educational agencies affected by the fires. Some of the state rules suspended effectively immediately are:

  • residency requirements for the remainder of the school year
  • some education code requirements around the use of temporary facilities
  • the requirement that a student's permanent record be transferred by a former public or private school within 10 school days of request
  • requirement that the state impose a penalty for failing to meet minimum instructional days and minutes.

The order also directs some state agencies to aid local education agencies with destroyed or damaged schools in developing a plan to temporarily house displaced students.

Schools impacted by the ongoing fires across Los Angeles have newly added flexibility in their recovery efforts after Gov. Gavin Newsom signed an executive order today
