Governor Gavin Newsom issued an executive order suspending state rules for LA County local educational agencies affected by the fires. Some of the state rules suspended effectively immediately are:
- residency requirements for the remainder of the school year
- some education code requirements around the use of temporary facilities
- the requirement that a student's permanent record be transferred by a former public or private school within 10 school days of request
- requirement that the state impose a penalty for failing to meet minimum instructional days and minutes.
The order also directs some state agencies to aid local education agencies with destroyed or damaged schools in developing a plan to temporarily house displaced students.
