School Districts (as well as other entities), under existing law, must use a “natural” voice to notify the listener that a recording (i.e., robocall) will be heard before the automated robocall can commence. AB 2905 imposes an additional duty to notify the recipient if the recording is also powered or generated by AI. School communications are exempted from the preannouncement requirement if the call is related to the health and safety of students. Announcements for non-safety related purposes such as communicating the commencement of a semester, graduation ceremony dates or other such events are not exempted. Districts can avoid the need for an announcement for non-emergency messages if parents opt in to the use of this system. For additional questions on your District's automated call system, feel free to contact F3 for additional guidance.
