Finding Ways to Support Foster Youth On Their Journey to College

Foster youth face unique challenges in their journey to college, often grappling with instability, lack of familial support, and limited access to resources. As thought leaders, it's imperative that we advocate for comprehensive support systems that address these barriers. By creating partnerships between schools, social services, and higher education institutions, we can ensure that foster youth receive the academic, emotional, and financial support they need. These partnerships could provide mentorship programs, tailored college counseling, and financial aid navigation, empowering foster youth to envision and achieve their educational goals. Additionally, it's crucial to develop policies that prioritize the needs of foster youth, such as waiving application fees, offering dedicated scholarships, and providing housing during breaks when traditional dorms may be closed. By taking a holistic and inclusive approach, we can create a more equitable pathway to college for foster youth, allowing them to thrive and succeed.

The journey to college for foster youth is not just about academics; it's about building resilience and hope in the face of adversity. As leaders in education and social policy, we must recognize the importance of fostering a sense of belonging and self-worth among these young individuals. Programs that focus on life skills, mental health support, and community engagement are essential in equipping foster youth with the tools they need to navigate college life. Furthermore, representation matters—having role models and mentors who have walked similar paths can be incredibly inspiring for foster youth. It's vital to create spaces where their voices are heard and valued, ensuring that their experiences inform the development of supportive policies and programs. By fostering an environment that celebrates their strengths and potential, we can help foster youth not only reach college but also excel and envision a brighter future for themselves.

As a former foster youth, my college journey was not easy. Living in so many different foster homes, frequently changing schools, feeling isolated and disconnected, and falling behind in school were just some of the hurdles I faced daily. When you are in foster care, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed and abandoned because you don’t have a family to pick you up when you fall down. I went to a public high school for my first year and then moved to a Catholic school as a sophomore — and would attend two different public schools after that. Because I moved so much, my school transcripts often got lost. When I started the new school, they enrolled me as a freshman until I advocated for myself and got placed in the sophomore classes where I belonged.
