Senate Bill 1341 proposes to amend Education Code section 51210 by adding media arts (e.g., animation, video and web design) as a recognized subject alongside Math, English and Social Studies to name a few. More than a unique piece of legislation, the proposal elevates a non-traditional subject area to sit on the same level with what most would consider educational fundamentals. This provides engaging and real-world topics for students to explore but more broadly, it's signaling a change in the educational landscape that is responding to rapid movements with AI and other forms of technology for which students need to be prepared in order to effectively enter high education and/or the workforce.

Reading, Writing, Arithmetic...and Media Arts
It is imperative that these vital forms of production and design become standard, high-quality offerings in schools and other educational settings. These offerings are important for students to skillfully wield these forms for their own creative expression, academic development and career preparation, as well as to gain critical literacies in analyzing and negotiating multimedia experiences.
We recognize it as vital for 21st century students and particularly in California, given our creative economy and the growth of these media arts areas, in industry and in our economy and their key role in our evolving society.
