Consensus On Cell Phone Bans In California?

State leaders nationwide as well as here in California have recently expressed substantial concern regarding the negative impacts of cell phone use in the classroom. While there is not much debate surrounding the negative impacts of excessive cell phone use generally and in educational settings, some California districts are also highlighting the benefits and inextricable integration of technology in our daily lives. Where the state and the nation ultimately land on the issue is still a debate in progress but submission of multiple points of view will at least provide the legislature a full picture upon which to base any guidelines imposed.

“Cellphones are part of our culture and for many students and families, a necessary vessel of communication around transportation, extracurricular activities, childcare and the monitoring of students’ medical conditions,” Michelle Dawson, a spokesperson for Livermore Valley Joint Unified School District, said in a statement to The Mercury News. “Our focus is on educating students on how to use their cellphones respectfully, responsibly and within the boundaries of our established policy.”
